2012 West Coast Scooter Trip

OR - Crater Lake National Park

We entered the park from the South Entrance. We stopped at the campground at Crater Lake (6000 feet) and there were still 7 foot high piles of snow in many of the camp sites and just enough bare ground to pitch a tent. With all the melting snow there were puddles of water everywhere. I have experienced this condition several times in the past in the high Sierra's. It is the perfect conditions for “snow mosquitoes”. I talked to the lady at the campsite registration and she reluctantly acknowledged that there were a lot of mosquitoes around but “not so many today”. Pat and I decided that we would find a place to stay at lower elevations. We stopped at the visitor center and saw a very nice movie on the parks creation and geology in the area. Most of the park was closed because of lots of snow still remaining but the road on the West side of the Crater was open and we could travel out the North Entrance. Crater Lake was spectacular!!!.
